eBook: Japan, food and mental health

A book project about everyday food in Japan, depression, culture and what should not be oversimplified.

Work in progress: this page does not accept sign-ups or payments. Publication information will be added only after the manuscript and review are complete.

Premise

No romanticising and no miracle foods.

I want to explore how the food environment, daily rhythm, loneliness, community and access to meals intersect with mental wellbeing in Japan. I will not present Japanese food as a treatment for depression or transplant one culture directly into the reader's life.

Each chapter will separate cultural observations, scientific evidence and practical ideas.

Planned chapters

First structural draft.

1. The everyday table

Home meals, convenience stores, canteens, cost and access without judging a culture.

2. Routine, work and loneliness

How time, shift work, eating alone and community may shape everyday choices.

3. What evidence says

Dietary patterns, limits of observational studies and caution about causality.

4. Mental health

The role of professional treatment and the boundaries of nutrition advice.

5. Practice without copying

Adaptable ideas without pretending there is a single Japanese model.

6. Recipes and context

Simple dishes with substitution guidance for ingredients available in different countries.
